After winning the 2008 Best of the Super Jr. tournament as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Wataru Inoue vacated his title after deciding to take the step up to the heavyweight division. This prompted the need for another tournament held quickly, this one under singles elimination format. Despite the odds being stacked against him on the final day, due to his eventual opponent having a forfeit semi final win, Tiger Mask captured the belt for the fourth time.
